- Rodents
- …and more!
As exotic pets continue to gain in popularity, it’s important to consider more than just their adorable nature. If you decide to commit to caring for these unique creatures, we want to help you understand all aspects of their unique needs. Some of them may be small in nature but their daily care is no small responsibility. In fact, small mammals are especially sensitive to their environments and there are several different factors to consider so that their well being is positively impacted:
- If you recently acquired your exotic pet, visit us for a full physical examination. Depending on your pet, they will need vaccines, spay and neuter surgery, and/or other preventative services.
- The type of diet your exotic pet is on is vital to their health. Exotic pets have specific nutritional requirements. Bring samples of your pet’s food to their visit so our doctors can give you the best dietary advice.
- Your pet’s habitat is also of prime importance and it is helpful to take pictures of your pet’s living quarters to show our doctors. The amount of space, bedding, and toys in their environment all play a role in their well being.
- Are you handling your pet properly? The amount of stimulation you’re giving your exotic pet in their habitat is as important as how much stimulation you’re physically giving them. Rodents and rabbits tend to do well in quieter areas since they are natural prey animals and can become especially nervous.
The veterinarians at Acton Animal Hospital would love to talk with you about your exotic mammal’s special needs. Please contact us with questions about your pet’s needs or schedule a visit today!
